I teach second and third grade literacy to two dynamic groups of learners in Washington state. The neighborhood represents a variety of cultures/families, all of whom are represented in our classrooms. We have students who speak multiple languages and who have varying levels of financial need.
Excitement is the name of the game in our classroom.
Whether we are learning about poetic forms, the life cycle of the Brassica plant, or how to read with grit, the students in my class are excited to soak up all they can.
My Project
Recently at our bi-weekly library visit, our librarian led a discussion about the different genres of books that students can find at our library. When each genre was discussed, students were eager to learn what kinds of books were in that genre, and where to find those books around the room. One of the most popular genres with students in both of my classes was, surprisingly to me, the biography genre! They were excited to see names of people they have heard of as book titles: Helen Keller, Martin Luther King, Jr and more!
I would like to capitalize on my students' excitement for genres by updating the biography section in my classroom.
There is a new set of biographies out now, that would be a PERFECT match for many of the readers in my classes. The set is called "Ordinary People Change the World". The people that are highlighted in the books include people who are known and not yet known to my students: Martin Luther King Jr, Rosa Parks, Jim Henson, even Lucille Ball! The illustrations are vibrant and engaging, much like the graphic novels that are so popular. I really hope to surprise everyone by adding these titles to our classroom library!
