My students are fighting an uphill battle in more ways than one and they need your help. I teach at a Title I school in North Central California where 90% of our students are on free and reduced-price lunch. Some students also having the additional challenges that come with being second language learners with 80% of the student population being within this group. All my students live in high poverty neighborhoods where crime and violence is considered a natural part of life. My school does not have the funds to support the extras that would help make learning fun and interesting. Reading current events that interesting and at their appropriate level is what would help my students achieve more success in school.
It doesn't matter what obstacles they have to overcome in their lives, all of my students have a positive outlook on life, and have many different dreams that they are working very hard to achieve.
They are great at working together to achieve a common goal, as well as working independently to achieve a personal goal. My class is an active and safe place where we engage in numerous activities that allows learning to happen in different ways.
My Project
Scholastic News is an amazing magazine that is all about current events that are high-interest and relatable to children. The articles are written in kid-friendly language that is suitable for the grade level of the student in which they are written for. The articles cover anything from science, social studies, history, and current things happening in the world. Another great component of the subscription is that it comes with an online component that provides videos that go along with the articles and practice sheets that are all standards aligned to what they need to learn.
Reading nonfiction is a difficult thing to do, but using Scholastic News will make it more interesting and fun!
With this subscription we will be able to do many different things. We will be able to use the online component as a class and learn extra information about the topic. We will be able to learn the nonficition standards through interesting reading. We will be able to work in collaborative groups to do further research on the topics that are in the magazines, and so much more.
