Each morning I get to greet happy, energetic, and creative students who love to learn. My prekindergarten students love to learn new things in a variety of ways. Many 4 year olds think very concretely and literally, not abstractly or figuratively as youth and adults do; to a prekindergarten child, things are as they appear to be. Organizing the learning environment to support this mindset is very important. When learning about economics, students should experience these concepts through play, direct instruction, and socialization.
Prekindergarten students learn with their whole bodies; love to taste, touch, move, explore, smell, watch, and wonder.
Teaching students through play, sensory exploration, movement, stories and song will help students develop early literacy and math skills needed as students move through out their educational careers.
My Project
This market will teach prekindergarten students about the importance of money, goods and how this exchange takes place.
Students will practice going to the market to buy food, this includes the exchange of money for a good.
Learning that goods and services are things that we need to purchase is a valuable life lesson. Students need to understand that you can't just go to the store for food, you have to pay for it. It is that exchange that drives this unit of learning. The practice will be a valuable lesson learned during play. Play is a very powerful teacher.
