My students need quality books to learn about the environment around them. This NGSS Complete Collection for second grade provides that. It comes with lesson plans for using these books to create engaging, meaningful lessons.
I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district. My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Many face a home life without both parents. Because we live in such a rural area, in some cases, the parent/parents are unable to find full time employment.
If they are lucky enough to find employment at all, the money barely stretches enough for food and shelter, let alone extras like technology, books and school supplies.
I teach in a Title I school where most of our students qualify for free or reduced rate lunches. My students are bright and eager to learn. They love to read and explore the world around them, but many will not be able to enjoy the "typical" life experiences of children their age because of their socioeconomic status. I do the best that I can to provide them with engaging learning activities, but with declining budgets that is becoming more difficult to do.
These children are our future and a good education and knowledge of our environment and our world is key to breaking the poverty cycle.
My Project
My project consists of a collection of NGSS recommended books about our environment. I am hoping to raise the quality of books that I can teach from and that my students have access to.
My students are bright, inquisitive, and eager to learn about the world around them!
I want to teach them about things that are in our world that they may not get a chance to experience. We read a reading passage about earthquakes the other day. Just the little bit of information that they were able to take away from that passage ignited something in one student that I have been trying to reach all year! I hope to continue igniting excitement about our environment in all of my students with this collection of books.
