My 7th and 8th grade students come every day ready to learn. They're at the perfect age in their education where their curiosity can't be satiated. They possess this eagerness to learn because there is so much about the world they still don't understand. Yet there are so many obstacles standing in their way.
These are high-poverty students.
What's more, these kids face adult-like struggles every day outside of the classroom. Often this is the most stable and structured environment that they have. Having resources like this book on hand only helps to enhance that stability for them.
My Project
Our goal is to use "Prisoner B-3087" as a guide for improving the students' English Language Arts skills. The hope is that the students will not only improve their reading and writing abilities, but also improve their ability to make inferences and argue claims.
The great thing about Prisoner B-3087 is that it provides these kids with a historical topic that they actually want to learn about.
It is something that truly engages them!
What's more, the book also has value outside of English. It provides students with lessons in tolerance, compassion, and other major social issues that relate to current, real-world circumstances.
