My Students
Our school is home to 360+ 6th grade students entering a departmentalized learning environment for the first time. With this model, students are exposed to history in much more detail than in years past. While a number of students come with some prior knowledge of the Holocaust, many students are learning of this tragedy in detail for the first time.
Students at this age are mature enough to learn about the Holocaust and are excited and motivated to learn about world events.
My Project
Using the graphic novel Maus, students will be exposed to the events and life lessons learned from the Holocaust. We teach students that history tends to repeat itself, and the Holocaust is a tragedy that should never me repeated.
Struggling readers will often pick up a comic book because the pictures and text are less intimidating than a typical book.
As they read the graphic novel Maus, students will complete a variety of activities that help them analyze Hitler's reasons for genocide and evaluate the impact on humankind. They will also learn about what life was like inside the concentration camp and about the daily struggles people went through as they fought to survive.
