Help me give my students current reading materials about sustainability and climate change, as well as a model water turbine and solar equipment for hands on learning about renewable energy.
I work in a low income rural school in Northern Maine. I have started a Penquis Go Grean club which is becoming involved in all things sustainable. The group of kids is particularly hands-on oriented and has quickly picked up skills for assembling stuff for garden and solar projects.
Most students are excited to have options for extracurricular school activities, and several who can't stay after are working individually on projects during the day when they have time and are done their school work.
My Project
These materials will be widely available to all students at the school. Students in the Go Green club will have immediate access to the solar accessories as we continue learning about solar toy cars and assembling two solar panels for our school. These materials and the turbine will help the club members learn about the renewable energy available on school property.
The equipment will then be offered to all the science classes to expand the hands on learning opportunity to the larger school body.
The books will will be kept in the library, where they will be available to our entire 5-12 grade school.
