My 2nd-5th grade students are all deaf or hard-of-hearing, but that's where the similarities end!
My students come from many different countries, cultures, and backgrounds.
Some have been at our school since they were three, others have just arrived with interrupted education or little-to-no access to language in their home country. Most are considered English Language Learners. Many have disabilities such as visual impairments, developmental delays, or emotional/behavioral challenges. Some students sign, some talk, some use AAC (augmentative and alternative communication), some do a little of everything. They are resilient, funny, and hardworking students. I am proud to work with them every day!
My Project
My students are growing and learning about their unique identities. Their identities include different languages, cultures, countries, preferences and values. They do all share one common bond - they are all deaf or hard of hearing and part of the Deaf community.

It is important for my students to see themselves reflected in their stories. It is important for them to have access to their language, American Sign language. It is important that they have these resources and learning experiences throughout their day.
These books, games, and materials will allow students to teach their families and friends about their Deaf identity and their language. Students will be able to make an impact by borrowing SuperDeafy and sharing the movie with the families and siblings. Games that encourage the use of ASL and that don't require reading or English allow students to teach others ASL and make meaningful connections in fun ways.
