My Students

Students at SMS are amazing! I currently teach 6th grade, which is such an exciting age and grade. My students are just getting to know each other as this is their first year of middle school. We work each day celebrate our differences so that we may grow personally. Students at SMS focus on our four core values: compassion, perseverance, respect and integrity.

My 6th graders are thrilled about reading and socializing.

Book Clubs are the perfect way to combine these two passions. I sincerely hope you consider supporting their social and academic growth.

My Project

As 21st Century Learners, it is vital for students to learn about the world around them. The assortment of books requested will empower students to not only learn, but to care about the world beyond their immediate scope. Social issues and influential people were chosen as the subjects of these books so that students can further develop their own character and be inspired to make a difference in the world.

Students will read these books with other students to form partnerships in reading and in making the world a better place.

Students will engage in literacy skills to improve their comprehension of nonfiction texts. As a culminating project, students will create informational books and Ted Talks that share their learning with a great audience. This is a new unit for students at my school, and we need engaging resources to propel our learning.

My team has researched non-fiction texts that were highly engaging for students. We also surveyed students to see which informational topics they found most interesting. For example, as students struggle with self-esteem and peer relationships, we thought Ugly would be an excellent selection. It tells the true story of a young man born with distorted facial features and his journey to self acceptance. Malala, Boys on the Boat, Hidden Figures and The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind tell stories of young people who accomplished great feats and changed the course of history. In summary, we want these stories to empower our students to love themselves so they can change the world.
