My school is located in a rural area in the western mountains of Maine. On paper, we are considered a low income/high poverty area. Off of paper and in the classroom, what some students may lack in financial stability they make up for with heart, stamina and resilience.
Second grade is a year of discovery, independence and an in-depth look at core concepts.
My class is made of up 16-second grade students Our classroom is a place of comfort and stability to many. My students work so hard to do their best each and every day.
My Project
With so much to teach and so little time to do so in our jam-packed year, finding ways to incorporate multiple subjects into a lesson is key. Money and story time are two subjects that my students are passionate about.
By supplying students with books such as "Money Madness" or "The Coin Counting Book", that deal with the topic of money and reading those out loud, students will be able to have more access to the content of the curriculum in an enjoyable manner.
These books will be paired with the realistic "money" kit to solidify understanding of specific coins and bills. It is my hope that by utilizing literature, students' interest in money, how it is earned, how it is saved, how to count it and why it is important will grow.
