Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
One of my goals this year is to enable all my students to read Macbeth in a language they can understand. The Spark Notes No Fear Shakespeare paperback series has line by line translations of the complete original text of Shakespeare's plays. This page format will help students read the text independently and better appreciate Shakespeare's language, imagery, and ideas. The Macbeth: No Fear Shakespeare edition will also have a list of characters and their description.
Reading Shakespeare can be extremely challenging. For my students, the task is even more challenging because I have only one class set of textbooks for five classes. That means that about 150 students will have to read Macbeth entirely in class from our British Literature anthologies. My students are Chicago high school teenagers who can become easily frustrated reading extensive explanatory notes in the margins, or waiting for the dictionary or the teacher to help explain the meaning of the words used in the text.
I have been teaching in Chicago for more than 12 years, and I know that my students are eager to learn. They just need to find the means to cultivate their understanding. The lessons I teach are geared to help students comprehend the text by participating in activities they enjoy like oral readings, dramatizations, listening to audio cassette recordings, and viewing film adaptations of stories in our curriculum. When students participate in activities they enjoy, they are more willing to listen and discuss the nuances of the language or the culture they are learning about.
It is very important for us to provide students with age-appropriate resource material they need to become independent learners. Our textbook has numerous footnotes on every page of the text. No Fear Shakespeare paperbacks allow students to read the words of the characters with minor explanations.
Last year, students gained a lot of insight from reading photocopies of selected scenes from No Fear Shakespeare. This year, I would like to have 150 paperback copies of the Spark Notes Macbeth: No Fear Shakespeare for each one of my students to read independently.
