My students come from low income families. They do not have many opportunities to experience all that the world has to offer them. It is my job as their teacher to teach them reading and social studies, but also to expose them to the different things that the world has to offer them.
They need to know that there is more out there than just what is in their neighborhood.
I want them to be curious learners, always seeking new and different experiences.
There are always books coming out by authors who understand the issues and problems of my students. They need to be able to read about kids that look like them and are dealing with the same things they are dealing with on a daily basis. Books such as The Poet X, The Boy in the Black Suit, Harbor Me, Attucks!, and more will allow them to see themselves.
These books will allow them to understand that there are people out there who understand the issues that are facing teens today.
These books allow my students to realize that there are ways to handle problems in a way that is mature and smart. Books allow students to venture into other worlds that they would not normally be able to go.
