Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class consists of 38 males and 56 females. Ninety-two percent of the students in my class receive free or reduce-priced lunch. Most students come from a blue-collar working family. We are in a high poverty location. My class is an essential way for them to be exposed to an engineering field.
Project Lead the Way inspires students to seek a career in a STEM field.
This year I also have the opportunity to teach a history class. My class has many diverse nationalities, of whom 60% are Hispanic, 30% African American, and the remaining 10% are other races. I have students who are English language learners and will benefit from the hands-on learning that they might otherwise not receive.
My Project
My students are predominately Hispanic and African-American. They are fully aware of the injustices suffered by their family, friends, and even themselves. Having a copy of Just Mercy will give them a glimpse of how justice does prevail and they don't have to worry about the system failing because of the color of their skin. Offering a highly acclaimed book such as Just Mercy will not only help them learn about events that have happened in the past, but will also help improve their reading skills and vocabulary. While students are learning at home, a good book can keep their mind off most bad things surrounding their lives.
