My students need a variety of toys to incorporate into their dramatic play time that not only expose them to diversity but also provoke them to talk about each other’s cultures and ethnicities.
My students are an equal mix of boys and girls. I have a wide range of diversity within my classroom. Not only is each child unique in their beliefs and personalities, but they also have such different learning styles.
I have an exceptional group of students this year.
My students are curious about all things, but especially about each other. I believe that teaching kindergarten isn't just about making sure my kids can read and write and understand math. I believe I have the duty of also teaching these children about empathy, respect, kindness, and tolerance. We read a lot of stories, both fiction and non-fiction, about people who look, sound, and act differently from ourselves, and my kids love learning about all our differences!
My Project
I have chosen items to add to our classroom’s very limited supply of dramatic play items. To get the most out of this time, I am requesting a variety of things including community helper dolls of various ethnicities as well as posters for the wall celebrating children from different cultures. I am also requesting additional play food items as ours are very outdated. The ones I have chosen will aslo be good for fine motor practice as students will have to play cut the food. Another item needed for our classroom is a mailbox. I will be creating postcards from all around the world so that students can write letters to their imaginary friends from all over. My hope is that incorporating a worldly view into their play will open them up to questions about all kinds of people and also expose them to all cultures and ethnicities. The last thing our tiny dramatic play corner needs will be a storage shelf. This shelf will allow me to leave items in student view so even if they’re not playing, their environment is rich with diversity.
