I serve an incredible, diverse group of teens and tweens from Santa Monica and the surrounding Los Angeles area. We are a Title I school with many socioeconomically disadvantaged students, and the primary mission of our school and district is to achieve excellence through equity.
I teach Spanish to students who range from novice to intermediate proficiency, and all of my students are language learners on their way to becoming fully balanced bilinguals.
My students are all born to be readers, but some of them just haven't found that perfect book in Spanish yet.
My Project
My students become more proficient in the Spanish language by using it to learn about topics of interest to them. As adolescents just beginning to discover themselves in the world, they are increasingly interested in understanding how the economy works. Many of them have already begun to do chores or outside work for money, and I believe that this is the perfect age to focus on increasing their financial literacy.
These books will form an important part of our classroom library, and will give my students the opportunity to delve deeper into the theme of financial literacy through comprehensible Spanish.
Therefore, the books will serve two important purposes--improving my students' language proficiency while also teaching them more about how the economy works in our country and across the world.
