Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 3rd and 4th graders in a Social Communication Support classroom. The students in my classroom have sensory processing disorders and autism. Students often struggle with processing different environmental factors in the classroom which impact student learning.
The primary focus of our classroom is communication.
The students in the classroom often communicate with each other utilizing pictures to express their wants or needs. In our classroom, we use a hands-on approach as we cook weekly, create art projects, utilize frequent movement breaks, and incorporate items that make every aspect of academics a hands-on experience.
Each student in my classroom has an Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) which provides them with a unique educational experience. Students participate in breakfast and snack in our classroom. During these times, we learn how to set a table, use manners, and further our focus on communication!
My Project
My students and I would like to take what we have learned about adding and subtracting and work on adding and subtracting money! We want to first learn what each piece of currency looks like and the value associated with it. While we can not use real money in the classroom setting like we normally would, we can use pretend money!
I would like to send home pretend money manipulatives for my students to start learning about money and applying it to real-world examples.
I would like some magnetic math manipulatives to put on my whiteboard while I teach students about currency and so they can have a model.
