This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Down in South Louisiana, my students hail from every corner of the sprawling Pointe Coupee Parish. Some of my students have to wake up as early as 4am just to catch the bus! 80% of this parish lives under the poverty line, and we are a Title I school that serves over 700 seventh through twelfth grade students. I might be biased, but I think my 7th period honors biology class showcases the brightest of the incredible students our school has to offer.
Our 7th period biology class is composed of 19 energetic, curious, and self-motivated students with a passion for discovery.
These students love going to the lab to design and perform scientific experiments and answer their own questions. They have the drive, and we just need the supplies to make their discoveries happen!
My Project
The final unit of the tenth grade biology curriculum involves human body systems. In this unit, students will learn about the nervous system, circulatory system, digestive system, and more. This unit is critical as they prepare for their state end of course exam, which determines whether or not they are on track to graduate high school.
Fetal pigs and dissection kits would be a wonderful, hands-on way for students to learn about the human digestive system because there is a great deal of similarity between human and pig organ systems.
In addition to the pigs and dissection kits being great tools for teaching content, they would also serve as an engaging activity for students. Students would be able to learn a new lab technique-- dissecting. This would expose them to the vast amount of possibilities and opportunities that exist in the science field. Ultimately, the dissection would be a great way to get students truly excited about science.
