My students need 24 nonfiction books about arctic animals, 24 fiction books about bears, coyotes, and seals like Corduroy; and clay tools, clay, origami books & paper.
From the moment the first bell rings until the end of the day, my second graders are busy learning. As part of this year's STEAM program, they are going to study representative arctic animals.
This year my students are going to engage in a study of representative arctic animals.
My students are going to learn about the types of animals that live in the arctic. They will learn about adaptations, camouflage and the impact of the environment on animals. My students will select an animal and find out how their chosen animal lives and survives. Using the nonfiction books requested for this project, students will learn about their animal's habits, life cycle, and adaptations to the harsh cold. They will take notes in their field journal. Students will compare the scientifically true facts they learned to fiction works about the same animals. As result of this project, my students will learn scientific method, research techniques and will learn the difference between fact and fiction.
My Project
Before we start, I will set up a reading display of 24 requested arctic animal books. Students will examine the books and write their questions and discoveries in Field Journals decorated with their drawings of arctic animals. Then, student teams will pick an animal that lives on the tundra and research more about its life cycle, how it lives on the tundra, special adaptations, and how it fits into the food chain. After they have completed their research, they will listen to classic stories about the different animals and note the differences between fact and fiction. I am asking for 24 nonfiction books and 24 fiction books, journals, and art supplies. At the end of this project, all students will make a clay figure of their animal and an origami-animal-food-chain which shows where their animal fits in the chain. My students will share their findings at a STEAM fair. To be successful, my students need accurate, accessible books. We need help because we have no money for this project.
Every day, my students are falling behind because they do not have access to materials they can use for STEAM research.
Working on this STEAM unit on Arctic Animals to research real animals and compare them to fictional ones, can open a whole new world of understanding for my students. They will be learning about math, science, adaptation and engineering, and use art to communicate their research. Please donate and help my military students.
