Help me give my students with special needs 2 sensory tables and a variety of sensory toys to provide a calming and engaging hands-on learning experience.
I teach at an amazing school located within the Greenville County School District. I have a class of 14 diverse and unique students! My students come to school each day with a smile on their face and excitement for learning! Our classroom is garden themed with our motto being "Mrs. Cotton's Cactus Kids, we stick together!" I have no doubt that I have the most amazing kiddos, and I can't wait to see them learn and grow in our "garden".
We are a group of diverse learners in a special education, self-contained, multi-categorical classroom ranging from Kindergarten age students to 3rd grade.
Our classroom is about building skills to function in everyday society. The work we do in this classroom helps students build strong relationships, understand and deal with emotions, follow directions, and access general education content in different ways. As my students make gains in my classroom, they begin to try small chunks of the day with their typically developing peers. We celebrate little wins together each day!
My Project
In our "Learning Garden" we bloom best in an environment that provides exposure to a variety of multi-sensory opportunities. Many of my students struggle with processing all the different sensations they receive from their senses, and how to react to them. Sensory play is a calming outlet for my students to engage in learning through interesting, stimulating, and exciting experiences!
The 2-way Sand & Water Table and Light Table with sensory materials will allow my students to explore through their senses and develop necessary skills.
I have seen enormous gains in my students' academic abilities, as well as social interactions with peers and adults, while engaged in sensory learning games. Being able to provide different hands-on play centers will help meet the sensory needs of each student. We would be thrilled to continue to enhance our learning with the addition of these tables in our sensory space!
