My students are in an urban district where they have many needs and face challenges. Some of our students are new to this country, others are being raised in single parent households or by grandparents. We have many students in poverty who are homeless. Over 50% our students receive free or reduced price lunch. Our school is their safe place. The school is very crowded. We have no place for a computer lab, so I have a cart. I have more students in a class than devices. Some of my classes have 35+ students.
The school has about 1,000 students who attend and I teach technology to all of them.
The devices we currently have are worn and torn. I teach students in Grades 3-8, so even the curriculum is diverse. We have an energetic building. Everyone works really hard to make a difference in the students lives.
My Project
We are requesting four Chromebooks that will allow students to practice typing. We use sites which include Typing.com and Typing club. We need to have students learn to type because most of the assignments are on computer. Testing is also done on computers. The more they practice will improve typing, which in today's world is more of a life skill.
They will use the Chromebooks to practice coding.
Again, these skills are important for our students to learn and be exposed to. We use Code.org and Scratch. The students are really engaged and empowered when they are learning to code. The other important use is learning the Google tools. Students need exposure to Google docs, sheets and slides. I teach Grades 3-8 and most students need to practice using these tools because by high school they will be using them for most of their assignments.
