This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach 400+ future leaders. These children range from Pre-K to 1st graders. Many of our students coming to Pre-K and Kindergarten do not know their given name, only their nickname. There are two self-contained classrooms and most are nonverbal. Many of my students come from homes with no books.
Our school is Title I with about 70% free or reduced meals.
Many students take home food backpacks for the weekend.
A large number of our students take care of themselves and even younger siblings. Coming to school is their safe space.
My Project
I would like to provide our new preschoolers with board books and to teach them how to enjoy books even as nonreaders. Some requested titles include The Little Blue Box of Bright and Early Board Books by Dr. Seuss, The Little Blue Truck, Little Owl's Day, All the World, From Head to Toe, Good Night, Gorilla, The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel, Dear Zoo, We're Going on a Bear Hunt, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and The Napping House.
These fun, new literature board books are much more durable than regular paperback books and will be great for these new young learners.
Most of the students have never had books read to them or even held books in their hands.
The durable board books and books will encourage a love of reading and ultimately be lifelong learners of reading. I know these books will be an inspiration for learning and make a difference in their young lives.
