I teach in an inner city school that is filled with students that are from low socioeconomic homes. After the hurricane in Puerto Rico, we got a lot of move-ins as well. Therefore a lot of my students are English language learners. The school that I am going to be teaching in is a very old school and also has a school department that doesn’t have the funds to help teachers get things they need for their classroom that will benefit their students which is why I turned to DonorsChoose.
My Project
This upcoming fall will be my first year teaching. I am to the moon about having my own classroom! I am so excited to meet all my students and have a fantastic year! My big downfall of being a first-year teacher is that I am starting with a blank slate which is great and all...until you realize how expensive it is to furnish your classroom. I will be doing a lot of small group teaching throughout the year. Especially to my students who are just learning English. I feel the horseshoe table would be a great addition to help me better teach all the students in my class this year! In math we will be doing centers so the students will rotate through four. One center will be on the rug so a group of students will be doing a math game of some sort to work on the skill of the lesson. Another center will be at their seats where they are working on independent work. They will have another center that will be more hands on whether it be creating arrays in their math workbooks to represent multiplication problems or creating shapes that have a certain area or perimeter. They will then have a center with me where I can work with them at a table with a word problem to help them become better problem solvers. Having the horseshoe table will help me in the center with all the students around it so I will be able to work individually with all of them and also talk to the whole group and be able to see how they’re doing. This table would also be used when I pull my students for books groups and when I have students in RTI.
