Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in our school are part of a Title I, inner city school district that welcomes one of the most diverse populations of children in the area.
As an ICT teacher, the children in my classroom reflect the diversity of our school. I have a mix of both general education and special education students who come from a variety of ethic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
This year will be my second year teaching in a Kindergarten and 1st grade ICT classroom! What I took away from last year was the knowledge that these formative years can have a great impact on the type of learner a student will develop into. Therefore, it is imperative that students at this age are inspired by their school experience. The students at our school are a truly inspiring group of young people - they come to school ready and eager to learn. As such an inspiring group, I believe that it is our duty as teachers to give them an education that can inspire them in return.
My Project
Independence in the classroom can have great power. Last year I explored how an increase in both independence and student choice and ownership would impact the learning of my students. I did this by introducing station/center based learning in all subjects. The 24 kindergarten and first grade students in my classroom were broken into small groups that rotated between an average of 3 activity based centers for reading, writing, and math. Each center had activities of 4 different levels of difficulty. Each student was responsible for independently selecting the level of difficulty they believed would best further their understanding of a given subject. My students took to the challenge with great enthusiasm and their progress spoke for itself. Both engagement and academic achievement sky rocketed! The students exceeded my expectations of what 5 and 6 year olds could handle! There was, however, something we lacked: a technology based center.
We have very limited technology in the classrooms.
The teachers are given one desk top computer for the classroom - not nearly enough devices to satisfy the learning needs of a small group of students. It would be wonderful to add a center to our rotation that would allow students to explore and hone their technological skills. Because we are a Title I school with the majority of the students on free lunch, many of our students do not have access to technology at home. Therefore, it is essential that our students are exposed to technology in school.
A class set of iPads would be a game changer for our students. Any support you can give would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
