Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Oh to be a kid again; full of energy with a brain like a sponge. My students love learning! They are resilient and hardworking; they don’t allow their socio-economic status or language barriers stop them from asking questions and exploring. They are all individuals with large personalities that most certainly make every day an adventure.
“The beauty of the world lies in the diversity of its’ people.”- Unknown.
This quote is truly exemplified in our school. We have a student body of almost 950 students, 84% of which come from non-English speaking homes. This can sometimes be a challenge, but it makes us a more cultured and diverse school family, nonetheless. We can use these differences to learn about each other and the world.
Each day I strive to not only educate my students to the best of my ability, but also instill in them a feeling of belonging. There are times in my day that I find myself teaching relationship skills and manners rather than a specific learning goal, and to me, that’s ok. One of my goals is to create respectful, self-sufficient leaders that realize the potential that lies within themselves.
My Project
These materials will greatly impact the engagement level of my students during our daily literacy and intervention centers. Students, especially at this age level, love to have fun, so if they think they are "playing" while completing these tasks, then they are more likely to stay on task, stay focused and be engaged.
These games and activities are no old school worksheet that requires ink and paper.
These incredible resources are age appropriate, can be reused and come with very basic directions. Each game or activity was selected because it directly correlates to a reading or writing skill that we learn in first grade. There will be picture cards that students can use to practice sequencing events. There will also be games that reinforce word families, short and long vowel sounds and other basic phonics and phonemic awareness skills. In addition, this project includes sight word bingo, rhyming bingo and grade level prompts that will guide students to constructing a proper paragraph. I am confident that by having these materials in our classroom, my students will have a variety of opportunities to successfully practice foundational reading and writing skills, at an independent level.
