Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine learning about science by doing experiments with hands-on materials? With these materials, my students will be able to learn about forces and motion and many other science topics in a more fun and engaging way.
My students will also be able to practice valuable reading skills tailored to their ability with these guided reading books set in Spanish.
95% of my students come from low-income households. Learning through play with hands-on materials, is one of the best ways to reach them and close the achievement gap. My classroom is mostly comprised of English learners (El's) and English as a second language (ESL) students. This is our second year to hold a bilingual program at our school, which means my entire class is Hispanic this year. All of my families speak Spanish at home and chose to put their child into a Bilingual program. There are twenty students in my classroom this year.
My kinders are full of energy and are extremely capable learners, but require a little extra motivation and different ways of reaching them through more interactive learning tools.
My Project
In our small groups when we do guided reading, my students will be able to learn important reading skills such as sounding out words and reading syllables as we read our new Spanish nonfiction readers.
With the new STEM science materials, my students will be able to quickly grab a box of experiments and practice on their own or during our small group time. I can put them out for my students to learn with another teacher.
By having these materials, my students will be learning fundamental skills such as collaboration-a 21st century skil-as they work together to solve problems such as which experiment to do and which materials they should use.
