My Students

History is the way of the past and yes we need to learn it. Unfortunately, with limited resources I'm often struggling to find ways past instructing history using outdated methods with texts that are way over my students reading level.

My classroom is widely diverse with most students coming from struggling families.

With obstacles at home, learning becomes just another obstacle. By the time they reach my middle school classroom, their reading levels are far below were they should be. They're energetic students who need to build their confidence in reading to be successful in life.

My Project

I'm requesting a wide range of historical novels and pictures books that I can use to instruct reading in a social studies class. I strive for my students to learn to read and with limited time in the day I really try to make that a reality. My solution, teach reading social studies, too! However, my resources are text books that are about six grade levels above my students abilities! With these resources, I will be able to focus on influential people and events of the past at their reading level. They will learn the content while learning to read at the same time.
