Mr. H. from NC is requesting educational kits & games through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need to play and explore--help them by providing toys, games, and an Able Net All-Turn-It Spinner to access the games!

My students are placed in my classroom due to their multiple disabilities. Their learning challenges range from vision impairments and cognitive delays to gross and fine motor limitations.
But their strengths lie in perseverance and a good sense of humor.
I am honored to share these students' moments of joy and help them discover new experiences.
In addition to the personal challenges my students face, they also face the larger challenges of our community. Our school is a high needs school with around 85% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Resources can be hard to find at any school, and our district faces new limitations from the state legislators without the help of funding to help implement these changes. The specialized equipment that my students need to learn effectively can be hard to come by.
Flashcards are boring. Practicing skills repeatedly can get tiresome for staff and students alike. But play is fun!
Human brains are made to learn through play.
But by the time my students reach middle school, many of them have not had consistent access to varied play opportunities.
I'm asking for the games Count Your Chickens, Hoot Owl Hoot, Hot Potato, Trouble, Snail's Pace Race, Alphabet and Color Go Fish, Crocodile Dentist, Tiny Polka Dot, and a foam bowling set. These games provide practice with foundational math, literacy, and social skills. Wooden puzzles with large knobs, blocks, snap beads, animal counters, hog wild squirrel popper, and pull back cars also provide new ways to practice foundational skills. They will provide learners with opportunities to fully engage with content while building the communication skills essential to a fulfilling life.
The other items you’ll see on the list help adapt the games for the students’ unique needs. Enlarged dice, the magnetic board (allows games to be placed vertically), black adhesive shelf liner (reduces visual clutter for puzzles), mini lights (increase visual attention), and an adapted spinner will help students with visual and motor difficulties use the games and puzzles. Golf sized wiffle balls make great abacuses when strung on taut ropes, and they are much easier to grasp than the smaller commercial abacuses!
Most importantly, these games and books will enable students to have more choices about HOW they learn classroom material--providing valuable practice in self-determination. Play allows all of us to practice self-determination skills, like choice-making and problem solving, in a low-risk environment, and it's fun!
I hope that each student who passes through my classroom has fun while building the skills that they need to be a self-determined adult; the games and toys in this project will help make that happen!
