Have you ever helped your Mom or/and Grandma bake those special homemade cookies? My students don't always get the opportunity to help out at home. Some are by themselves after school and are not allowed to use the oven. Baking in class is not only a reward but a math lesson each week!
I have a class of 22 1st graders.
Our school is a Title 1 school. We are a very low income school with more than 70% of students on free or reduced lunch. Many students come to school and have not eaten the night before. We have many special needs in our class as well, from Autistic to learning disabled.
My Project
We are requesting materials that we can use to bake and cook with. The students enjoy our Fridays, which consist of baking. Each week we have to gather ingredients and supplies needed for our weekly treat. The students do all the work and I am there to supervise and make sure that they know the difference in the measurements. The students carry the passion home with them and want to help out. They try to talk their families into baking together. We also learn the safety measures needed around a stove/oven, hot plate, griddle and mixers.
I am very passionate about finding ways to make all students learn.
The students find baking/cooking a great reward, not realizing that they are learning some very important math skills. We are only first graders but we will understand measurements in a way that most kids will not.
