Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the wonderful opportunity this year to teach second grade in a small alternative elementary school in Harlem. As I began doing my initial assessments of my students' reading abilities, I found that most of my 28 second graders are reading a year or two behind grade level, and a large number of them have negative attitudes toward reading. One of my major goals for the year is to be sure that my students are able to read at or above grade level by the end of the school year, and to help them to develop a love for reading.
The best way to build reading skills is to spend as much time reading as possible. As second graders, my students have a limited attention span for sitting and reading from their independent reading books, and after half an hour, this becomes tedious for most of them. Therefore, I like to ?disguise? some of the reading that I have my students do. One of the ways that I do this is through reading centers.
For the last period of each day, we have a center time where I do a small-group reading lesson with a few students while the others work independently in centers. These centers include a variety of games, puzzles, and activities that get children to read and practice reading and phonics skills in the context of something fun. Right now, I have centers where children draw pictures by following written directions, ?fish? for sight words from a bowl with a magnetic fishing pole, and play sight word Bingo. However, my students have been using these centers since the beginning of school, and are in need of new, more challenging, exciting center activities to help them develop their reading skills and become great readers.
By making reading fun, I can help my children develop their love of reading along with their reading skills. Please help me build a classroom culture where children want to be skilled, enthusiastic readers with learning center games and activities.
