This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is located in a high poverty and crime area.There are not too many places for my students to play outside. School is one of the few places that my students are able to play safely with each other. For years, the PreKindergarten curriculum was more academically-based with a focus on attaining reading and math skills. My school district is now promoting play-based learning. My students come to school eager to learn and play-based activities are developmentally appropriate. They actively participate in the literacy and math components of my daily schedule, but they use their new skills during Choice Time and outside play.
My Project
PreKindergarten students learn more effectively through play. Play gives them opportunities to practice their academic and social skills while creating and playing games. My students will use the outdoor play equipment to develop and improve their gross motor skills, like jumping, skipping and running. They will learn cooperative learning skills while creating and using rules to play with each other. They will learn that sharing is a part of healthy play. They can practice academic skills through games that use the equipment, such as letter tag or color bean bag toss. Students also release stress through outdoor play and they can focus during academic learning.
