This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with special education students in a sub-separate setting. They are taught all core academics with me in the learning center. We teach students in grade K-3 using a variety of multi-sensory approaches and hands-on materials. My school is in an urban setting with the majority of the students receiving free and reduced lunch. The school is diverse and works hard to meet the needs of all its students. I modify and accommodate curriculum, use music and STEM activities to increase independence and learning, and allow students to learn in the way that is most appropriate and successful for them.
My Project
My students need extra support to learn the same material as their peers. Through pretend play, hands-on material and sensory strategies students can be involved in their learning in a way that is exciting and fulfilling for them. Using our imaginations and playing are important milestones for children. My students need additional time to learn concepts and thrive in an environment that allows them to explore materials and ideas freely.
With the use of sensory strategies, students have a chance to express their love of learning in a safe and accepting environment.
Having science/STEM kits and interactive games is essential for students who need extra support. Therapy sand and dramatic play costumes can enhance student learning. Playing is the best way for young children to learn academics, social skills and life lessons.
