I work at a Title I school that serves grades PreK to 5th. Most of my students receive free or reduced lunch. Many of my students face issues that children shouldn’t have to deal with at this age; incarcerated fathers, living with elderly grandparents, foster families, and economically deprived families. Despite so many hardships they are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school so they can learn all that they can. They come in daily with the mindset "I can do it when I try my best"
We provide a safe, rigorous and nurturing environment.
Our goal is to prepare our students for tomorrow. We teach accountability and we teach toward college readiness.
Two units that will be taught this year will be Reading the Weather, Reading the World and Historical Book Clubs. Our present library is not equipped with the required reading materials to aid and enhance our student’s growth in these units. Being able to choose booked on their current reading level or even challenge themselves to the next level will motivate them and build their reading strengths.
My encouragement for my students is to learn something new everyday.
My students struggle with comprehending nonfiction text. With Eyewitness Nonfiction Readers Level 3 and Level 4, my students will be able to choose and read leveled books of interest independently. Also, I will use these text In small reading groups to instruct my students on skills they need to strengthen such as text structure, main idea, and key details and text features.
Students will also work collaboratively with their classmates on group research and in book clubs.
Students will have a meaningful discussion about important parts of the books that they wish to discuss or facts they have learned. Students will then present their findings or group discussion with the whole class through poster boards, brochures, booklets, oral presentation, etc.
