I am a special education teacher in a low-income area on the West side of Chicago and I serve intermediate-aged students in a full-day inclusion program. My program allows students who are typically pulled out of the general education classroom for language arts instruction the opportunity to learn with their classmates. This provides for my students to receive personalized educational benefits individual to each child while affording them the situations to be a truly equal part of their home classrooms. I have 12 students and I am only one teacher; so, at times, writing projects become tedious to the children as they continually raise their hand to ask, “How do I spell?? This is where a classroom set of 4 “Talking Franklin?would step in to help me when I can't clone myself and be all throughout the room! The “Talking Franklins?are personal electronic dictionaries that provide so much more than just definitions! These “Franklins?will help my students improve the quality of their writing by helping them to spell more accurately and help them comprehend while reading better! Two of the many features include instant-spelling corrections that recognize phonetic spelling attempts (luv = love) and a homophones guide. To help the student choose the correct spelling, the dictionary SPEAKS the new choices so that the student is confident in their writing and spelling of difficult words! These durable “Franklins?also SPEAK the definitions of their 46,000- word dictionary. By speaking out loud, this dictionary provides students with difficulties decoding and comprehending a chance to read independently and increase their love of reading and writing! “But,?you ask yourself, “won't this be a distraction to other students in the class?? Great question! The “Talking Franklins?come fully equipped with a headphone jack that will allow for more privacy when using the device and in turn, a more seamless inclusion of otherwise excluded children! It even comes with the ability to input personal spelling lists and play spelling games. What a great way to motivate a discouraged student to study! The generous contribution of these "Franklins" will help students who desire so much to be like their peers to enjoy a better inclusion experience and develop a stronger love of learning!
