Mr. C. from Henderson NC is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
The cost of sending 45 students to King's Dominion for Math and Science Day is $1237, including <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.

King's Dominion in Virginia has a Math and Science Day. During this day our students get to take measurements of various rides, use calculators to figure out equations, and investigate the science and math behind familiar rides. They will also learn problem solving skills, make observations, and gather data. Through these activities they will be gaining a new understanding of the practical side of what they learn in the classroom. Experiencing rides while studying the math and science behind them enriches both the ride and the concepts involved. I teach 3rd-5th grade AIG (gifted students), but this trip will be for all of the 5th graders at our school. I teach at a high-priority/low-income school. 99% of our students receive free lunch. Our students would love a trip like this because many of them have never visited an amusement park because of financial constraints. I will be teaching them how to build a roller coaster so they will understand the physics involved in creating an amusement park ride. This trip will be an extension of science and math concepts that will be taught in class. For this event to take place we would need a donation to help us pay for the children's tickets to the park and for transportation to the amusement park. I would like these students to have this experience for several reasons. First, it is an excellent teaching tool to show students how math and science are used in the "real world" and that it is not something just found in textbooks. Secondly, many of these students do not have opportunities to experience a trip like this. Many of the families struggle to make ends meet and do not have the disposable income to allow their children to go to an amusement park. This trip will be an educational and fun trip for our children who really would benefit from an experience like this!
