I teach a diverse group of high school students mathematics through a combination of STEAM projects and traditional practice problem methods. Most of our students have struggled with school because of many different barriers, such as homelessness, having to care for younger siblings, needing to have a job to support themselves or others, and many more. I see these students putting forth tremendous efforts every day in areas that most of us take for granted, such as where is the next meal coming from, where can I sleep tonight, and so forth. We do have a food shelf and a clothing depot that we use to provide many our students with some of their basic needs.
We have been very successful with students who have been with us from 9th through 12th grades; they have graduated and gone on to post-secondary education at a rate of more than 90%.
I have heard from many of our graduates, and current students, that ours is the first school that they have felt good about and have been accepted into the community. We emphasize building relationships with our students, and we do have a family type of atmosphere at our school.
My Project
Many of our students come to us several years behind most of their peers, in reading and math skills. I am trying to engage them by using projects such as programming, engineering, and design with 3D modeling in CAD programs, to produce products that can be printed on 3D printers. We have purchased a few 3D printers but have been extremely limited in the quality of the machines because of our budget.
There is nothing more satisfying to me than the joy I see when a student sees the things that evolved through their imagination and hard work come to life as a real object, that they themselves created.
I am hoping to receive a Monoprice Delta Pro 3D printer, because it can print larger volume objects, faster and more accurately, than the 3D printers that we already have.
