Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have the pleasure of being the Speech Language Pathologist to 20 fantastic Pre-K and Kindergarten students in a Title I school on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. My students come from a low-income community and are challenged by speech and language impairments. Despite these challenges, my students come to school daily eager to play, laugh, and learn. My goal is to best support my students’ speech and language needs, in turn improving their academic, social, and emotional development!
My Project
As a teacher of speech improvement, I am constantly learning what materials best motivate my students and support their speech and language development. My Pre-K and Kindergarten students are hands-on leaners – expanding their language through games and imaginative play.
The crafts, toys, and games included in this project will help to increase participation and help to improve linguistic, cognitive, and social skills of my students.
Toys such as the Lewo Play Kitchen Set and Fisher-Price Medical Kit promote oral language development, pretend play, and social skills. Materials such as the Rhymenoceros Board Game and the Alphabet Linking Cubes support phonological awareness and early literacy development.
My students and I are so appreciative of any donations! Please consider supporting my project to create an engaging, play-based speech and language learning environment!
