I currently work at Findley Elementary which is a School of Rigor and part of the Des Moines Public School district. Our mission is to pave the way in accelerated urban academics. Our school is over 95% free and reduced lunch. Our students get breakfast lunch and snack daily. The majority of my students rely on me for fulfilling not only their academic but emotional needs. We are their consistent/stable homebase. At Findley we are raising leaders through our Dreamer Academy program. We believe that all should have the opportunity to go to college no matter your status. We work hard by letting students know now that they are capable of doing so! We take them on college visits and talk their future careers regularly!
My Project
Research has shown that alternative seating in the classroom leads to students who are more motivated to learn, and feel in control of their environment. They will have higher engagement for learning. It helps with the overall culture because they are able to get along with other students more successfully because they are not sitting with the same people all day and have a choice to move and take a break if necessary. It allows them to have safe spots in the room. I have always wanted to get away from the traditional sit facing the front classroom and make the classroom feel more like a home environment(we are there 6+ hours a day) where students want to be there. The seats will add color and are easily moved around the room to give students more choice and seating.
