My Students

My students come from a low income area who have a wide range of backgrounds. Kindergarten should be a place of learning to share, play, and make friends. My students have been virtual so far this year and have been working hard on academics. When they are able to come back to the classroom, I want to focus on play and hands-on learning.

My students cannot wait to come to school to play and make new friends.

Some of my students have never been to school. Kindergarten is their first time entering the doors of our school. I want my kindergarten students to believe in themselves and in their abilities to shape the world around them. They are so excited to come to school and I want to make sure that their classroom is welcoming and fun for when they are able to come in.

My Project

I currently work in a low-income area with kindergarten students. We have been virtual since the beginning of the school year. We are a class of thirty students and have been very academic since the start of school. Many of my students have never been in school before since pre-k is not mandatory in my district. We talk about being friends and we work on our social emotional skills by reading books. However, we know that kindergarten is so much more.

My students dream about the day that they will be in school to play, learn, and have fun with their friends.

My class is already fitted for academics, but is lacking in toys for them to play with. I want my students to be able to learn and grow with their friends. I want my students to be able to come to school after months of academic learning to be able to play with their friends. Please help me create an environment of play and play-based learning. When my students come to school, they will need to learn how to play, share, work with others, grow their social emotional learning, and learn what it is like to have friends.
