Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from different socio-economic backgrounds. Most of them just arrived to New York and are still learning to adjust to our system. Lack of English is the main obstacle and my concern since some students shut down because they cannot communicate their needs or the content is too hard.

I teach English language learners- 2 classes of beginners, 2 classes of high beginners, and one class of intermediates.

Our goal is to learn language and content that will prepare for the state assessments. My school does a good job supporting our neediest population with many staff members available not only for the child but for family as well. However, because of our school size, I believe that sometimes these newcomers get lost because of not knowing what is going on or what to do, especially, students who just arrived. My students need to feel safe in an academic setting and often times lack of language can be discouraging. That's why I strongly believe that if students are presented with meaningful and comprehensible material, they won't get lost. They would want to continue to learn and inquire more.

My Project

Research has shown that students, especially the ones who have interrupted formal education and low literacy level, learn the best with the aid of visuals and today, with the use of technology. A Chromebook in our class would be used for not only instructional purposes- language enrichment, but also for research, exploration, and making connections. I also have seniors who need to complete college and financial aid applications. Having a Chromebook in our class, will be very useful and practical for various reasons. My students will get more comfortable with typing, researching, and translating the content. It will be a resource that will be used again and again not only by this year's students, but in the upcoming years as well. When reviewing for a test, we have played Jeopardy game using my chalkboard and envelopes and it hasn't been as fun as it should have been. I am sure having a Chromebook would make our Jeopardy game more fun and animated.

Having a Chromebook in my class for students to use will ensure me that my students have completed their tasks, college apps, and most important of all, I would be able to see that they are engaged in their present and in their future- becoming someone.

We take things for granted today but you would be surprised by how many students do not have a computer at home. Having a Chromebook in our classroom will make them feel that they have a place to go to when in a need of a computer.
