This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello there!! I am a New York City High School Teacher. This school year I teach biology populated by 9th and 10th grade students. As with most city schools our student population is extremely diverse: racially, economically and academically. Many of these youngsters seem to have lost that childhood curiosity for the world around them that was, at one time, so insatiable. And by default, could not care less about science!! But with your help we can reverse these feelings!!
For the next two months the classes will be immersed in the anatomy unit. The students will be learning how different body systems satisfy the basic life activities. What better culminating activity for the students then to conduct a dissection of some of the organisms we have been discussing in class? What better way to reinforce the material then to see with their own eyes the organs and systems that they have been reading about for weeks. I need the organisms to complete this activity- in this case the fetal pig!!
The basic equipment we will use - the blades and aprons, pins and probes - as well as the pigs themselves I received through donorschoose last year. The students had such as amazing experience that they are fighting for the limited spaces to act as teacher assistants during this years dissection. All I need this year is some more pigs and we can give a whole new group the science experience of their high school careers!! I would like to complete this dissection with both of my period 4 Biology lab classes, over 60 students!! But to do that I need your help!!!
Dissections are such an integral part of the high school science experience. They not only help to students learn their content material but it also helps to prepare them for the types of science experiences they could have in college.
Most adults, when asked, have strong and usually fond memories of their high school dissection. Now you have the opportunity to help create the same type of memories for my students.
