Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are working hard to achieve their academic goals despite the challenges they face in urban, low-income neighborhoods. The majority of my students (80%) have free or reduced-price lunch due to their family's low-income status. In addition, the majority of my students are English Language Learners that are attempting to acquire English. Hence, they struggle with limited or inconsistent access to technology, access to cultural experiences, and access to academic support at home. Our school's mission is to help all students achieve their highest potential.
As an English Language Arts teacher, the middle school has a rigorous curriculum that exposes our students to complex texts.
Many of the class activities and follow-up homework require students to use technology like computers to read/research informational texts (articles). Building our classroom library is a crucial aspect of providing engaging books that are relevant to our curriculum. These activities are crucial to helping students interact with new material and make connections. We also have intervention programs to help struggling readers with phonics and fluency. Furthermore, students also participate in learning stations to practice skills and strategies in small group instruction. All of these activities help engage students in their learning.
My Project
Up-to-date young adult literature that attracts even the most reluctant readers is one of my main objectives this year. Help me give my students the experience of seeing through a character's perspective. These novels about the Holocaust will be read independently and will help build the important background knowledge they need for their Project-Based Learning experience in History (Social Studies) class.
Adding Holocaust novels to my classroom library will give students a variety of historical fiction novels that will enhance their learning.
Most importantly, students will read literature that they can use to learn from world history and learn from the past. The books will add topics of tolerance, resistance, and perseverance.
