Ms. H. from Colorado Springs CO is requesting Books through DonorsChoose, the #1 classroom funding site for teachers.

Learn About Our World Through Literacy Too!

My students need 15 sets of 6 non-fiction biography novels to use in reading groups. This will allow us to meet the literacy and social studies standards with the same book.

My Students

My students face challenges everyday, but don't have opportunities to see others overcome challenges to improve the world. These easy to read biography chapter books will allow my students to read about fantastic role models who made the world better...hopefully it will inspire them to do it too.

My students are amazing second graders who are excited to learn.

Our school is currently over 90% free and reduced lunch, high percentage minority, and high percentage military. We are expected to meet social studies state standards, but are not given time in the day to dedicate directly to social studies. So, we need these chapter books to use in reading groups and in book clubs to increase our abilities in reading, writing and social studies. Through a biography literacy program, my students will be challenged to improve the world around them and overcome their odds. Reading about these great role models will provide my students with positive role models. These students work hard everyday to prepare themselves for middle school, high school, college, and the world. I hope these books will encourage my second graders to become the change they are reading about.

My Project

These 83 easy to read biography chapter books will change education in my classroom and the learning of my students. We will be able to integrate literacy and social studies during reading groups. My students will use these books in reading groups, book clubs, and literacy centers. They will create projects, posters, research papers, discussion groups and power point presentations to share with the school about these biographies. Most importantly, I want my students to make a connection with one of these role models. I want them to find something that inspires them to overcome their surroundings. They will learn to develop their own talents more positively, grow into great leaders and change the world. Hopefully, in the future, I will be ordering biographies about the students who now attend my classroom because they read a biography that inspired them to become great!

This project is vital in providing my students with examples of positive role models.

We will be using these books to help us read grade level or above in reading and writing. These books will ignite our enthusiasm for learning. This donation is so critical to our meeting state standards and especially for developing into greater people ourselves who will one day change the world.
