Our school is an urban school located in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. The school serves students in kindergarten through grade five. Classrooms are multicultural with diverse learners spanning all grade levels.
Students in the school continuously engage collaboratively with their peers, learning to be considerate and respectful in a positive manner.
Students want to please their teachers and try to live up to both academic common core standards and classroom expectations. In general, students are ready to learn and prosper after leaving our school and moving up to the middle school environment.
This past Summer, I have been in search of some newly published books, of varying levels, lengths and subject matter. I want students to be fully engaged in what they are reading on topics that pique their interest level and spark their natural curiosity. I believe the more interaction children have with books, the better readers they become. Therefore, an updated and extensive classroom library will enhance the classroom's language and literacy environment.
My Project
Students have daily independent reading time in order for students to naturally find a love of reading and build confidence. Fiction books such as "The Clone Chronicles"by M.E. Castle, a book of verse such as ¨Science Verse¨ by Jon Scieszka, and biographies such as "The Girl With a Mind for Math: The Story of Raye Montague"and ¨The Girl Who Thought in Pictures: The Story of Dr. Temple Grandin¨ by Julia Finley Mosca... will help students improve comprehension, vocabulary and fluency in different genres. Students will also be able to take Accelerated Reading tests online to "compete" for points in the "school-wide" program. I want students to have a choice in the books they read, allowing reading at different levels, subject matter and genres, in order to enhance enjoyment and motivation to read. It is my hope that allowing students to have a choice in their reading students will be carefully observing the work of accomplished writers....improving student writing skills of differentiated genres.
