Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My superhero students walk into our classroom full of life every day looking forward to learning. Our superpowers are being save, responsible, respectful, amazing, fantastic and super! We celebrate our mistakes because we know making mistakes "makes our brains grow". My Super Heroes see themselves as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, artists and problem solvers.
I teach at an elementary school where 70% of our students get free and reduced brunch and lunch.
Most of students' parents work 2 to 3 jobs struggling to pay the high rents in our area. A few of my students have opportunities available to them outside of school while others only have opportunities and experiences that come from inside of the school walls. My classroom is a safe space for all students and I strive every day to make them feel loved and valued.
My Project
With the funding of this project I can have a Parent Engagement event where I can teach my students and their families about Financial Literacy by listening to stories and playing games. With the funds I would purchase the following books, Lily Learns About Wants and Needs, Shanti Saves Her Money, and Kyle Keeps Track of Cash . I would also purchase five Hasbro Monopoly Junior Board games, Exact Change Game, and two Buy It Right Shopping Games. These games and books focus on financial skills, such as counting money, saving, and spending. It is my hope that this event will encourage families to talk about earning, spending and saving money.
The importance of money and how to properly use it is important for all ages.
These chosen games and stories will create great conversations about money between the students and their families. And, at the same time the students can tell their families what they have learned about money in class.
For participating in the Parent Engagement event each family will receive a packet of play money to continue their conversations about money at home.
