My Students

The school is a performing arts school in the heart of Manhattan! I teach Physical Setting/Chemistry course at an urban, inner-city performing arts high school. Every day, I strive to teach not only the required curriculum but the real-world connections and data needed to fully explain these science subjects to artistically inclined students. My goal is not just to have my students excel in the classroom but to develop into knowledgeable citizens ready to make an influential impact on the world.

Textbooks in chemistry classes are grossly outdated.

Students are artistically and musically talented, with wonderful and unique personalities. We contain a diverse population at our school, made up of all types of ethnicities, cultures, and learners. In order for students to completely understand complex, cutting edge information involving these topics, they need access to real-time data and research via the world wide web, etc.

My Project

Conductivity testers visually demonstrate the relative conductivity of solutions. The conductivity tester is safe to use with students because the electrodes are surrounded by a non-conducting material.

Students will use the conductivity tester into a series of solutions to visually demonstrate to your students the relative conductivity of the solutions.

The lamp will shine brightly for strong electrolyte solutions, less brightly for weak electrolyte solutions and will not shine at all for non-conducting solutions. The conductivity tester is safe to use with students because the electrodes are completely surrounded by a non-conducting material, and the cord is positioned so it will not come into contact with the test solution. Students are also going to use wooden blocks for different hands-on activities. They will utilize the blocks to learn about moles and stoichiometry. Students will use the blocks for balancing chemical reactions as well. Students can also play a board game to explore the ideas of redox and electrochemistry in an interesting way.
