My students need comfortable personal boundaries while learning in close proximity on the carpet and simple, effective opportunities for collaboration.
"Many classrooms are unmanaged. As a result, little is accomplished in them." -Harry Wong;
By using the simple management system of organized carpet lessons with rules of personal space and ease of access to collaboration opportunities, this rug will allow my students to accomplish their dreams.
In an environment with high expectations, hard working faculty and students, and honest dedication, there is no doubt that my students have eager minds and caring hearts.
Many of these students have been together for a couple years now and I often find them encouraging each other morally and academically.
My Project
My students will use this rug on a daily basis for our reading lesson. It is important for students to have minimal distractions and have many opportunities for engagement through multiple learning styles. By placing this rug in front of the interactive SmartBoard, students will be able to easily use auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning styles. They will also be able to have multiple partners on different color dots to turn-and-talk to for partner collaboration. Since the rug has rows of colored dots where students would sit, it also would allow for effective grouping strategies. For example, students could be grouped by same color dots or one student from each color dot in one group. By forming these varying groups that are easy to organize and remember, students will learn the importance of working together to solve problems.
The spotted rug would improve my classroom environment, which can make or break a student's experience during the year.
By teaching students respect for personal space and how to successfully collaborate with all types of personalities, a positive classroom environment will be maintained. When students feel like they are in a positive atmosphere, they are more apt to be happy and have an exponential outlook on being a lifelong learner.
