Our school consists of students from PreK - 4th grade. We are a community of diverse learners with special education, gifted, ELL, and high poverty students learning together in each classroom.
"Phonemic awareness instruction, when linked to systematic decoding and spelling instruction, is a key to preventing reading failure in children who come to school without these prerequisite skills." (Moats, 2012)
The one thing that this diverse group of students has in common is that they are determined and eager to learn. Their willingness to try, despite their deficits, proves that they can be successful if provided the right classroom atmosphere and resources.
My Project
The impact of explicit phonemic awareness instruction has proven to show significant gains in the areas of instructional reading level, overall accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Providing students with multiple lessons on how to manipulate, blend, and segment sounds helps to strengthen auditory skills that are necessary for reading success.
Students who struggle early on with phonics and phonemic awareness, usually in kindergarten, will greatly benefit from intervention services in order to prevent a huge gap in reading abilities.
Engaging in phonemic awareness instruction develops students' understanding of sounds, and that knowledge is directly reflected in their spelling and writing.
Phonemic awareness has been shown to be very powerful predictor of later reading achievement. The phonemic awareness materials, such as the Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Primary Curriculum, will provide the extra support that all students will benefit from.
