Every day, the students in my classroom walk through the door and bring with them a wide variety of cultures, languages, religions, experiences, interests, and special abilities.
Though there are many differences in my classroom, one similarity is that my students share a love of learning.
They exemplify the IB Learner Profile as Inquirers, Communicators, Thinkers and Knowledgable citizens. I aim to provide my students with the tools they need to succeed and do it in ways that cater to their diverse interests.
My Project
Kindergarteners are such enthusiastic learners, excited to grow their minds and become avid readers! To keep their enthusiasm going throughout the year, I need to provide my students with lessons and materials that are tailored to meet their individual interests and abilities.
The materials in this project will help my students leap through reading levels to meet and surpass their Kindergarten goals!
A variety of leveled books within my classroom will give me the flexibility to choose the topics, genres, and difficulty levels of the books my students will read when they meet with me in their guided reading groups.
Without the variety, I will be limited to books that may only be interesting to a small portion of my students, dimming the enthusiasm of those who do not find a personal connection to the texts. Additionally, by providing a wide range of leveled books, I can meet the academic needs of all of my students to bring them up to grade-level goals and beyond!
A portion of our day is also spent doing individual and partner reading. The Buddy Reader sets will provide a leveled library from which the students can choose books at their individual reading levels and keep until they are ready to switch them out for new titles. The students will be able to engage in interesting literature at an appropriate but challenging level, not just during dedicated reading time, but whenever they have a few extra moments during the day. The students will also be able to share and engage in the same text with their reading partner, as each title in the Buddy Reader sets has multiple copies. This all contributes to a sustained enthusiasm for reading while supporting students' literacy growth!
