My Special Education classroom is for exciting learners with mixed abilities at the elementary age level. My students are a remarkable group of young people that are learning to navigate the world. Our classroom family is a safe place where they can learn to regulate their emotions, express themselves appropriately, and be empowered in all academic and personal settings in life. They all learn differently and that makes my job so much fun to figure out how to teach each individual student.
My Project
These sensory room resources will provide my students the opportunity to regulate themselves and refocus their attention on their classwork. The noise cancelling headphones will allow students to block out overstimulating noises. The weighted blankets will give them a feeling of calmness and help them to calm down.
Research has shown that time in a sensory room helps children improve their visual, auditory and tactile processing, as well as fine and gross motor skills.
By providing a sense of calm and comfort, sensory rooms help children learn to self-regulate their behaviors, which ultimately improves focus.
