As a kindergarten teacher of six autistic children, I expected to be teaching my students activities related to daily living. I never thought that I would get to teach these developmentally challenged five year olds how to read. Yet, I have been fortunate to have students that are not only beginning to read but want to learn how to read on their own. These children love working both by themselves and in groups (which is rare for children with autism spectrum disorder). I would like to give my students as many reading opportunities as possible and by giving them access to Leap Pads they would be able to better their reading skills while working independently and at their own rate of learning. By giving them these Leap Pads, these children will not only be learning how to read but will be learning many other skills as well, while improving their confidence. I would like to get them at least three Leap Pads along with some starter books.
